ABOUT THE CENTER

The Centre for Climate Change, Migration and Development at the HORN Institute for Strategic Studies analyses the compounding effects of climate change, environmental degradation, and forced displacement across the Horn of Africa. The Centre integrates climate science with political economy and human security analysis to understand how environmental shocks translate into migration, conflict, and developmental setback.

“The Horn of Africa is ground zero for climate-driven instability. Understanding the pathways from environmental stress to conflict and displacement is not an academic exercise — it is a matter of survival for millions.”

The Centre works with governments, humanitarian agencies, development partners, and community organisations to produce research that informs climate adaptation planning, displacement response, and development programming. Our analysis spans pastoral livelihood systems, urban migration, drought and flood dynamics, and the nexus between climate change and conflict.

Our analytical framework examines climate-security-development linkages at three levels: environmental processes and their physical drivers, human security consequences and displacement dynamics, and the policy responses needed to build resilience and sustainable development pathways for Horn of Africa communities.
